Here comes the rain again... There's a better-than-even-money chance that my power is going to go away in the next few hours and stay off for anywhere from 12 to 48 hours.

The LAT notes the conviction this week of a man who smuggled rare monkeys into the U.S.--in his pants. Upon discovering four endangered birds and 50 exotic orchids in his suitcase, officials at Los Angeles International Airport stopped the man for questioning. When asked if he were hiding anything else, the man responded, "Yes. I've got monkeys in my pants."

Mass arrests of Muslims in SoCal: I trust that everyone agrees that round-ups of religious or racial groups is something that bears the closest scrutiny. The developing sophistry of the government that non-citizens do not have rights to due process is despicable: the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness do not end at our borders. I support enforcement of the visa laws, but when people come forward to comply with the law, they should not be "forced to rest standing up, some shackled and moved to other locations in the night, frigid conditions in jail cells all for men with no known criminal histories....Some, he said, were hosed down with cold water before finding places to sleep on the concrete floors of cells." Intimidating religious minorities is intolerable, no matter what color are the shirts being worn.
